Migratory Bird Habitat in Urban Forests

As a 2020 recipient of the David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship, I will soon begin a new project looking at how migratory birds use urban forests en route as stopover habitat to refuel. This work will combine field data collection, remote sensing, physiological assays, advanced tracking technology and robust modeling approaches to understand 1) what forest characteristics predict high densities of migratory birds in New England? 2) How does urban forest structure and community composition affect resource availability, bird diets and physiological condition?
This work will be completed in collaboration with Dr. Susannah Lerman of the USDA Forest Service, Dr. Alexander Gerson from University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Dr. Jeffrey Buler of University of Delaware.
